We have a MIRACLE! His doctors are calling Paul's recovery a miracle.
Over the weekend, Paul was moved from Scott-White specialty hospital to the VA hospital (in Temple, TX). No respirator, still on an oxygen tank but mobile. No discernible brain damage. No loss of cognitive or motor skills. Heart is good. His lungs are still weak from the ARDS, and his body is weak from the trauma of the last few weeks.
He tested positive for MRSA when he arrived at the VA, and is being treated. Paul has a couple of months of physical rehabilitation and respiratory therapy ahead of him. Today and tomorrow he will undergo a series of CAT scans, MRIs, and other tests that can be performed now.
Paul is walking (a little), talking (a lot), and eating a very restricted diet. My mom reported that he was 'back to his old self', goofing around and joking with any one in his room. I spoke with Paul for a few moments on Saturday morning. I was happy just to hear his voice: "Hiya Sis, How are you?" raspy and rough, but alive!
Paul says he has a story to tell now, and I can't wait to hear it!
The 'cause':
Although still not 100% certain, Paul's doctors believe that the cardiac arrest was caused by a buildup of calcium-blocker medications. Paul's body was not absorbing the medication at a normal rate, the medication built up, and cardiac arrest ensured.
Just like many of us, Paul saw several doctors who treated him for different reasons. And none of them were in communication with each other. Two doctors prescribed the same types of meds, Paul took them all because his doctors had prescribed them, and the doctors' lack of communication and awareness resulted in the cardiac arrest.
Lesson - always know what meds (all) your loved ones are taking, as well as who prescribed what, and for what reason.
Update 6/16/08 - Paul (and my Mom) flew home to SC yesterday to recuperate and get stronger. Paul walked out of the hospital Saturday afternoon - completely healed.
